Glow bugs are small insects, about seven inches long. They have a hard, black carapace that offers them minor protection. Although they appear to be a common insect, they have the uncanny ability to produce bright light in a 3-foot diameter sphere. When no other light sources are present, these bugs glow continuously. When even the faintest light is present (e.g., a torch), they stop glowing.

A glow bug is incapable of attack and cannot cause damage. They are also easily captured and placed in flasks to serve as illumination when there are no other light sources. Glow bugs do not survive in captivity and die within 48 hours of being captured.

These insects live in areas where decaying wood or fungi are prevalent. They thrive in dense forests, swamps, and underground settings. They eat other insects and decaying vegetation. Adventurers have spotted groups of twenty or more glow bugs in an area.
