Hippopotami are fat, heavy-bodied animals with short, stumpy legs. They have an enormous head with massive jaws filled with tusk-like canines and incisor teeth. These animals have a short, tufted tail and are almost hairless. Their skin has a grayish coloration. They are enormous creatures that are eleven feet long, stand five feet tall, and weigh close to three tons.
The eyes, ears, and nostrils are all positioned on top of the head so that they can be almost totally submerged but still be able to use all of their senses. When submerged, hippopotami surprise prey 30% of the time.
Hippos can stay submerged for up to five minutes. They are fast runners and can reach high speeds for up to 5 minutes.
A hippopotamus attacks with its jaws. A single bite inflicts 4d4 damage. Hippos can fight while submerged without penalty. In rivers and lakes, they rise up underneath and capsize boats and barges. A hippo has a 40% chance of capsizing a boat. Even if unsuccessful, passengers must make a saving throw vs. fear (+2) to avoid being thrown into the water.
Females and males have the same general characteristics. Young calves have one-half the health and damage potential of an adult specimen.
Hippos live in rivers and lakes in tropical climates. They eat grass and small mammals. They are aggressive creatures that attack anything that draws too close. These animals live in small groups.
