Leather bugs are flea-sized parasites that are harmless to humanoids. They reproduce quickly and attach themselves to anything leather-based. Infestation is quick and requires only casual contact.
Once infested, these bugs devour leather and degrade its integrity. Because of their size, it is almost impossible to detect them casually. A person has only a 5% chance per day of noticing them. The chance increases to 100% with a successful search of the object.
These bugs do not attack, nor can they be attacked. They infest leather items (e.g., backpacks, padded armor, leather armor, and small sacks) and degrade the object’s integrity until it becomes useless.
Leather bugs reduce the armor class benefit of padded, leather, and studded leather armor by one point every two days. When the armor class benefit reaches zero, the item breaks and is useless.
After seven days of exposure, the insects render all other leather objects (e.g., backpacks, leather pouches, and sacks) useless.
The only way to remove a leather bug infestation is by using an alchemic poultice.
Leather bugs are found mainly in tangled woodlands, swamps, and plains. Unwary adventurers can transport them into towns or to travelers without knowing.
